Dear Dr. Harvey:

Thanks for your latest e-missive. I'm pleased to report that things have
become significantly simpler and more straightforward for all parties
concerned since last we communicated.

Madame Castoriadis and I spoke at the end of the Castoriadis Cerisy
Colloquium. We have amicably worked out outstanding practical issues
regarding the two Castoriadis volumes Stanford University Press plans to
publish: _The Rising Tide of Insignificancy_ and _Figures of the Thinkable_.

Below, I specify--I trust accurately: the Castoriadis heirs will have read
the draft and communicated to me their thoughts before I send you the final
version--the terms we now wish to propose:

1. There will be two Castoriadis volumes translated and edited by me, with
the titles as specified above.

2. I shall provide the heirs with a list of all misprints of which I am
aware in the texts included. They will OK or correct this list and provide their own list of any supplemental misprints.

3. The heirs will work with me to answer any outstanding translation or reference questions.

4. It is essential that the heirs receive proofs.

5. Once I have new signed translator's contracts for both volumes, I will be
able to represent myself accurately as the officially designated translator.
I hope this will enable me to contact and collaborate successfully with the three persons who have worked on previous versions of some texts. It is important for me, as professional translator/editor of the two volumes, to respect their work while taking full responsibility for the final versions prepared for SUP publication. I will have to find current contact information
for one of the three persons.

6. I shall, as Helen Tartar requested, write 6,000-word introductory Translator's Forewords in each of the two volumes. Please specify this agreement in my replacement contracts. I shall endeavor to be even briefer than these word-counts specified by Helen, while ensuring that the contents (fourteen texts per volume) are properly and fully introduced, as Helen said was necessary. The Translator's Forewords and the notes will be submitted for the approval of the heirs. As legal author of the translation, I shall be given the opportunity by the heirs to discuss with them all suggested changes since the heirs recognize and value the importance of a plurality of independent voices and respect the participation of the person who executes the work. Their suggestions will be constructive and not be based upon any animus against me personally.

7. The heirs and I are also agreed on the definitive list of texts to propose for the two volumes. You will find the tables of contents at the end of this e-mail.

Please note:

A. _Rising Tide..._ would include the two texts the Castoriadis literary executors originally proposed. Since there was a 10-page addition error in their original proposal, there is room for the three short texts I proposed at Helen's request, which are the ones subsequently approved by your Reader. For the last two texts in the volume--interviews Castoriadis conducted with the late renowned scientist Francisco Varela and Alain Connes--SUP must contact Editions de l'Aube for rights.

B. _Figures..._ would include the entire contents of the French original.
For "The Social-Historical: Mode of Being, Problems of Knowledge," as
professional translator responsible for the volume I would simply require
written confirmation that SUP has obtained permission to reprint this text
originally written in English by Castoriadis which already appeared in my
edited Castoriadis collection from Oxford University Press, _Philosophy,
Politics, Autonomy_.

8. By approving this memorandum before I send it to you, the heirs will be
confirming that the terms set forth above have the consent and support of
the legally recognized Cornelius Castoriadis literary executors.

That's it. I look forward to your response and I remain available to answer
any and all questions so that we may move forward with dispatch toward
signature of the translation rights and translator contracts and toward
completion of these two important works.
