FOR TRAINERS, STUDENT TRAINERS, INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS
ADDITIONAL HANDS-ON INSTRUCTION 3:00-4:00 PM

CLARA GIBSON MAXWELL is a Certified Alexander Technique International (ATI) Teacher with a BFA in Dance from the Juilliard School who has practiced the Pilates Method for three decades. At her Paris studio, Maxwell integrates insights from both Pilates and Alexander for her private clients, using vintage machines personally designed by Joseph Pilates. She also teaches at such institutions as the University of Cincinnati, West Virginia University, New England Conservatory of Music, Baltimore School for the Arts, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques.

THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE allows us to rediscover the body’s stretch-reflex mechanism by fostering a heightened awareness of the way we react in various activities. In learning to inhibit our old habits, we discover new possibilities of movement. Releasing tensions, we gain an economy of motion. The result is a new sense of lightness and a physical confidence. Enlarging our awareness by opening ourselves up to our outer and inner perceptions affords us a greater freedom in our movements and in our thought. Ideal for dancers, singers, musicians, performers, and anyone else committed to self-transformation.

THE APRIL 6 WORKSHOP (1) provides a historical overview of the Pilates Method, (2) offers a lecture-demonstration of the Alexander Technique for Pilates Method trainers, student trainers, and intermediate students, and (3) allows hands-on AT instruction regarding students’/trainers’ own “use of self” in relation to the mat work.

A DANCER-CHOREOGRAPHER who is Artistic Director of Mon Oncle D'Amérique Productions, an international arts organization based in France, Clara catalyzes site-responsive, multi-arts choreographic projects that have toured Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and the US for the past two decades.
